October 3, 2015 – 3rd day of a post a day in October – OCD

Today’s topic is OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) another one of my wonderful disorders.

The dictionary says:

1. of, pertaining to, or characterized by the persistent intrusion of unwanted thoughts accompanied by ritualistic actions, regarded as a form of neurosis.

2. a person with obsessive-compulsive characteristics.

I find this to be very annoying. Everybody has different things they are obsessed with or compulsive about.

I currently am obsessed with my blogs to the detriment of my sleep and other things I should be doing. At one time I was obsessed with reading and spent all day and night reading. I was reading 5-7 or more books per week.

When it is comes to compulsive one of my most annoying ones is whether or not I locked the door. I try the door numerous times. I go to my car and then come back and check a few more times. I may do this 2 or more times. Then I finally get in the car and get out and start again. It got so bad I thought I was never going to leave the house.

Someone gave me the idea of locking the door and then repeating constantly all the way to the car, “The door is locked. The door is locked.” It did help to a point.

I also check the fridge and freezer several times because my mother left it open 12 years ago. I have gone all the way upstairs and come back down just to check.

As you can see, it can be a very irritating disorder. I don’t have it, but several people are compulsive about cleanliness. My son showers all day and changes his clothes too. It was worse when he was young. He washes his hands over and over as well. He won’t touch anything in a hospital.

Oh and we both are constantly checking for our phones. I freak out if it isn’t in my pocket. It used to be a watch. I couldn’t take it off even to shower. Finally broke that habit with a rubber-band. Snapped it every time I looked at hit. Finally took it off, but of course my phone has the time so a watch isn’t a necessity anymore.

OCD can be a very difficult disorder to stop and certain things happening will trigger a compulsive habit.

My heart goes out to you, Tessa! The entire area of mental health issues frustrates me to no end–especially the way insurance companies decide the standard of care (which really isn’t very helpful!). My daughter and I are stepping up and doing our part this October for our #write31days challenge :).
