The Outing
by Teresa Smeigh 2019
Meandering down the paths of the local park, Chris and Suzy held hands and talked about nothing in particular. She had tried finding out where they were going, but Chris wouldn’t tell her.
“I have found a great spot and I have a surprise for you,” he said.
They came out onto a clearing that had a large pond. The spot was beautiful. The birds and insects were chirping as they looked for a spot to sit.
“I know we have been in this park before, but I just found this lovely pond and would love to make it our place. Will you marry me?” He pulled a jewelry box out of his pocket and opened it to show her a ring.
She pulled back in horror. The ring was on a finger, a human finger.

A surprising jolt as one of my first reads of the day. I couldn’t help wondering if the finger matched as in age, ethnic, racial, or gender match. I was surprised that was my first question and not the inappropriate and scary presentation.

We all have different thoughts, there is no right way to take something. It definitely was inappropriate and scary.
