Monsters?

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“Oh, Allan go to sleep please…”

Allan continued to cry and to refuse to cross the room and get on the bed.

“What is the problem? Are you hungry? Thirsty? What?”

“There’s a monster,” he whined.

We hadn’t done this in a while. I had thought we were past this stage. “If I show you there is no monster would you please go to bed?”

He sniffled some more and finally said OK.

His daddy walked across the room, while Allan held my hand and watched.

He lifted the covers and went to look under the bed when something yelled and jumped out.

Allan and his daddy screamed. I laughed. His older brother had hidden under the bed and waited until we got Allan ready for bed.

When we finally got Allan calmed down and in bed I said, “There is no monster under your bed. It was just your brother and a monster wouldn’t fit under there with him.”
