He promised me he wouldn’t leave. He told me the decision to end it would be mine. The it I am talking about is the affair we have been involved in for 18 years. He has a wife and though he reminded me constantly that he wouldn’t leave her for me, I still held hope. This was one of my emotional times and he just watched me dispassionately as I cried.

“I don’t want to hurt either of you, but we can’t go on this way. These emotional outbursts ruin the mood,” he says impassively.

“I don’t want to end our relationship. I am happier with you than without. I’ll take whatever I can get from you.”

“Tonight, is ruined. I am going to take you back to your car now.”

By the time I got home there was an email from him. He told me his wife had found out and he had to lay low and he didn’t know for how long that would be.

That was 4 years ago. Somehow, I believe he used that as an excuse, but it was an effective one because he knew I had no desire to hurt his wife and would stay away.
