Flood
By Teresa Smeigh 2019
“The garden looks nice this year,” Mrs. Chalmers said. “You must have done a lot of work on it this year.”
“Well, Betsy is old enough this year to help me so I have had some extra help,” Samantha said.
Just then her two boys troop into the kitchen covered in mud. “What the heck have you been doing?”
John said, “We were playing in the pool.”
“What pool,” said Samantha still staring at the mud dripping all over the floor.
“In the backyard,” John said.
Samantha ran outside to find her back yard flooded.
“Betsy,” she yelled.
“What mom?” Betsy yelled back.
“Why is the back yard flooded and just look at my lovely garden.”
“Oh sorry mom, I must have left the hose running.” She wasn’t the least bit concerned at her mother’s feelings about the garden and its loss.
Mrs. Chalmers did her best to calm her down. Betsy took off and went back to talk to her friend on the phone.
The kitten wandered past and Samantha picked her up and held her while she cried.
Obviously, Betsy wasn’t old enough to be trusted to help in the garden. Samantha would start again on her own this time. She could only trust herself.
