Door # 13

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“There’s no return address,” the deliveryman said to his partner, John. “I don’t know if this is the right building or not because the address is illegible.”

“What apartment number is it, John,” Daniel asked.

“13 of all numbers.”

Daniel started to check the mailboxes for a 13. “This building doesn’t have a 13.”

John moved to the next building and checked their mailboxes. “There is a 13 here, but there is no name on it.”

They decided to go upstairs to #13 and see if the package belonged to them.

They stood outside the door and hesitated. Finally, John knocked.

“Come in,” came a voice from inside.

No longer hesitating John opened the door and stepped through, a scream issuing from him as he fell through the opening. Neither of them thought about the fact that the door was on an outside wall and therefore had no apartment behind the door and so he fell.

Luckily he was only on the first floor and there was a garbage dumpster right outside the door so he landed fairly softly and wasn’t hurt.

When he saw door #13 and no return address he should have just sent the package back to his company for undeliverable packages. He always was superstitious and he should have gone with his feeling.

Daniel wasted no time getting out of that building. He helped John out of the dumpster and they took off as quickly as possible.

Ice Cream Treats

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

I love ice cream and usually go for the larger treats, for example, a banana split or a large sundae. My biggest faux pax with ice cream was the times that I ate a whole carton (approximately a half gallon) at one time. Did it more times than I am proud of. Though right now I am hooked on ice cream sandwiches every day and more than one time a day. I will be glad when this current obsession is over.

Today’s prompt: bank, noodles, miracle

Lunchtime Miracle

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

It was lunchtime at the bank, and I was sitting in the lunchroom getting ready to check what Valerie had packed me for lunch today. It would be a miracle if it was anything but a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Slowly I opened my lunch box, surprised to see it wasn’t a sandwich. Whatever it was it was packed in a plastic container with a fork.

Pulling on the tab to open the container I found it full of leftover noodles from dinner last night. How refreshing, no peanut butter and jelly. She packed me something I liked for once. Noodles with melted butter or with catsup or with stewed tomatoes were one of my favorite meals.

I put the container into the microwave and then I texted her quickly to thank her. I was too excited to think she probably had a reason for giving me something special. I decided not to think about that now. I was just going to enjoy my noodles.

Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia & Allodynia

Causes, Diagnosis, & Treatment

**************************

I wonder if this is part of my current problem. My pain is getting much worse and I have been on opioids for over a year and a half. The suggestion of weaning off the opioid is kind of scary. It was the only thing that seemed to help me, but now something is wrong.
