Summer on the Boardwalk
By Teresa Smeigh 2019
“It cost how much?” Mandy asked her daughter.
“Just 15 cents,” 6-year-old Rhonda replied.
“What costs just 15 cents,” Mandy asked her.
“Everything,” Rhonda replied.
Mandy doubted it so she went over to the display window and looked in. She figured the postcard probably cost 15 cents. She was pretty sure that the sunglasses and those other objects whatever they were had to be much more.
“So you want a postcard, Rhonda?”
“No, mommy, I want sunglasses. The sun is hurting my eyes.”
“Sorry honey mommy doesn’t have enough money for sunglasses right now.”
Rhonda threw a temper tantrum and Mandy left her standing there. She came running up when she realized her tears weren’t going to help.
