Research Without Google
By Teresa Smeigh 2019
“Robert, get your report written,” mom says.
“Aw, mom this is taking forever.”
“Robert, you can work faster than your father and I could. We had to go to the library and use the encyclopedias. See the books on the to shelf? We didn’t have Google. We had to look everything up in books, newspapers, and magazines.”
“Are you kidding me, mom? It would take forever to research something and write a paper on it.”
“Yes it did take us forever, but we had no choice. You kids are having a much easier time writing research papers than we did.”

Turning pages or swiping a screen – it’s what you do with the information that counts. But I still prefer the old way!

I am just learning how to google what I need. Much easier.

Of course, it’s a characteristic of the old that they believe the young have it easy

It sometimes astonishes me how easy it is now. I wish I’d kept our family set of encyclopedias – all twenty of them – to remind me of those far off days! 🙂

You can find them on Amazon LOL! I ordered some volumes for a friend.

Easier, but harder to verify real facts… Give me an Encyclopedia Brittanica any day! Oh, how I love researching in the tomes of libraries. I think I would have made a great librarian and often wonder why I didn’t follow that path given my love of books. Ahhh, the sweet sweet smell of bound leather and old paper. Sigh… that moment of blessed memory was great! Thanks for the reminder!

Actually my kids have encouraged me to google. I love just typing a few words and a long list of possibilities opens up. I wanted to be a librarian myself, but the additional school put a kerbash on that.

I remember hours spent in the university library! Kids don’t know how easy they have it, though I guess now the trick is to sort fact from fiction…

Yes since you can’t believe everything you read on a website. There are websites that cite where they found the info to write their piece. I would tend to believe them over just some blog or website no one has heard of and just popped up on the web.

Too much fake news on Google. Students still need to access journals and papers via their university websites to help minimise putting rubbish into their reports. Thing is encyclopaedias too have their bias. Oh, where do we turn to?

Basically one or the other. It is hard to verify all the stuff we read. Like I said somewhere I think articles online that are showing where they get their info to verify their writing might be a little more trustworthy.

either can give false data, however I love them both.

And yet, we got the papers done, and maybe even learned something along the way. When I started my master’s work at age 50, I quickly realized I needed to join the computer age or I would be left in the dust. I do love being able to research that way, but still–nothing like a well-stocked library.

A good story with dialogue, Tessa. Give me a laptop any day with the ability to quickly do research and type, correct, and print. I went through years of typing, correcting with an eraser, and using onion skin for copies. I wouldn’t have the patience now. 🙂 — Suzanne

Oh yeah carbon paper and retyping because there was no delete button and how often can you type something without mistakes.
