For visually challenged writers, the image shows a small figure of an angel, releasing a dove of peace. Around the angel are lighted candles, pine cones, and a small wooden donkey.

This is the continuation of John and Susan. I have decided to make this a book. I am working on that on NANOWRIMO since there is a beginning that needs to be told. Part of these prompts won’t fit into the book but will use some of them eventually after a proper beginning. This manuscript now has a beginning, middle and end although it is not fleshed out yet. It is more like a slightly detailed outline.

The Saga Continues – Who Are These Twins

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Jack was avoided by almost everyone on his way over. He would have to have a royal proclamation made to insist that everyone cooperated with his questioning. He needed to know the whole story as he was now the acting King, while a new one was officially proclaimed by the customary laws. Jack was pretty sure the twins, as their father and a lawyer, weren’t in any shape to take on the leadership as it stood now.

Reaching the castle, he went to find Joanne, who was seeing that everyone was fed. Once a mother, always a mother. He smiled at her and waved. She handed him a sandwich and a plate of chips along with a glass of soda. They both smiled that such simple food was now available here in the castle kitchen.

“How did it go,” Joanne asked him while swallowing a sip of soda?

“I think we have a long road ahead of us. I will know later once I start going through the King’s papers and interviewing everyone who is ignoring me right now. It might be a good idea to call the USA and get some more farmers out there to help with the farm. I have a staff in the place where I live, but I know you helped out the farmers along with John. Speaking of John, how are all the boys doing?”

“They are speaking a little bit among themselves, but they all seem shy and don’t know what to say, even John, who is a chatterbox, is being abnormally quiet. I feel bad for all of them.”

“Ok let me know once the doctor has the results from the DNA tests. I am going to start the royal proclamation and make a list of who I need to talk to first. That will take some time, and then tomorrow, I will hope to start going through the papers. I am not looking forward to 16 years worth of paperwork. Who knows what I might find?”

Sighing, Jack heads to the royal King’s office and shuts the door. He checks previous proclamations and writes one up and lists the people he expects to talk to today or tomorrow at specific times. Jail time would be appointed to those disregarding the royal proclamation.

The proclamation is announced, and slowly the cook knocks on the open door frame of the office. She looks frightened.

“I am not going to hurt you. I just want to know what you know about what has been going on around here while I was gone. I had appointed friends to keep me abreast of the happenings in the castle and the town, and they reported that everything was fine. I trusted them, and then this happens. I don’t blame you, but if you know anything at all, I will be most thankful for any information.”

“Well, I know the King and Queen took that Princess Isabella and gave her full run of the castle, and then one day she arrives here with a double pram with two little boys who looked like twins in it. She took them upstairs and told everyone her husband, who we all know you divorced her, had given her the boys to raise on her own. She took over the nursery and walked them every day, but even I knew she wasn’t feeding them the right food for their age or even teaching them anything. Those boys are behind in their studies because the Princess didn’t get much schooling herself since she was a female. In my opinion, they aren’t fit to run the Kingdom yet. Not even with the two of them together. Prince Jack, we need you back to run this place. I hope you are considering it.”

“Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere for quite some time. I won’t leave my people floundering around with no leadership. Depending on the investigation, punishment will be meted out to my parents as the Kingdom sees fit. You are free to go, and thank you for talking so freely to me.”

The cook left, and the Princess’ handmaiden was there. “Come in, Stella, I won’t bite. You can be honest with me. This is not about you, but the Princess.”

Stella sidled into the room and sat on the edge of the chair opposite Jack. She looked like she had been crying. This wasn’t going well.

“Stella, tell me about how the Princess treated you and the boys? She seemed a little crazy when they took her out of here screaming about her children, and she knew they weren’t hers.”

“Oh, but she did think they were hers. I mean, she really thought they were hers. I didn’t contradict her since she could get me fired, but she told everyone they were her children, and everyone just let it be. She was mean, though. She beat those boys for no reason at all, not that she should have been beating them, to begin with. I don’t believe that is the way to discipline a child. The boys were afraid of her, and she taught then nothing. They can barely read, and write and I think that was due to the people around here helping them with words so they could read some simple books. I hate to say it, but those boys can’t run the Kingdom. They need help and training. Your Majesty, I hope you are going to stay here and run the Kingdom. I am worried that things are simply going to go down here.”

“Don’t worry Stella, I am not going anywhere soon. I will see my people through this, and hopefully, the royal twin will be able to take over for me eventually. I will stand by my people even if it means giving up my dreams of living a regular life.

“So glad to hear that your Majesty.” Stella got up and moved at a much happier pace after her talk with Jack ended.

The next to enter was the gate guard, John. Jack asked him if the Princess left the castle a lot. The guard started to laugh. “Are you kidding me? She left early in the morning with the twins and returned late at night, usually escorted by some bum. Certainly not the life for a child of any age. She didn’t care about them.”

“And my parents didn’t do anything about this behavior of their grandchildren? I can’t believe this.”

Joanne bursts into the room. “Jack, the doctor’s DNA results are here. Quick open them.”

Jack ripped open the envelope that was still sealed. The guard, who had escorted her upstairs with the sealed enveloped, retreated and closed the door. His boss remained as he was not asked to leave. Jack was silent. There was no smile.

“What’s going on, Jack,” Joanne asked, although afraid of the answer.

“Those boys are not our children either. This can’t be happening. I am glad the Princess wasn’t corrupting our boys, but where are our boys,” Jack was shouting now.

Joanne stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by not our boys, either?”

“They don’t match our DNA, either Joanne. Now I really don’t know what is going on. Mom and Dad didn’t even defend themselves. Is it possible they thought they were their grandson’s and that ditzy Princess sold them on the Black Market or something? She sure seemed to know where to get the first set to change, and I can see her wanting the money the boys would bring on the Black Market. Oh, God, please don’t let that be the answer. She could have also sold them as single children to disguise them. Though by now, there might be two boys walking around that look alike and are most likely blond like us. Hard to tell as babies, but teenagers really look alike. Now he had to search the Kingdom and the town and hope that no one had left the area and took one or both of them away. He should check the mainland as well. He would send out a royal proclamation requesting information.

Just then, Priscilla is escorted to the office. “Jack, where have you been all this time? I have been worried about you and Oliver. You just disappeared without a word.”

“Priscilla, you watch the news and read the newspapers I am sure you know damn well where I have been and what has been going on and now my biological children are also missing.”

“I am sorry to hear that, but when are you coming home to us?”

“I am not coming home to you. I want a divorce immediately. I have always been in love with Joanne, and we’re getting married as soon as the divorce is final by a Justice of the Peace. We will hold a proper wedding once we find all of our children and have them in one place. You, I believe, married me for the status of Princess only. Well, that isn’t happening.”

“What do you think that bitch wants,” and she points to Joanne?

“I want a man who is not afraid to stand up for what he wants and who will live with me in poverty because he loves me, although he certainly doesn’t have to. I love Jack, and always will. He is the father of my children, both biological and the two we were given by God to raise, and they are fine boys at that. Go away, Priscilla, and leave us be in our current grief.”

Jack requested a lawyer from town to come to the castle immediately after drawing up the divorce papers and to finalize the divorce as quickly as possible. He planned to marry Joanne as soon as possible. No more waiting for the woman of his dreams.

Now back to the proclamation to the return of his sons, the princes. He thought about the wording.

‘To the fine people of my country, the Kingdom of Bhatangary and our friends from the town and mainland, I beseech thee to come forward if you know of two boys who look alike. They most likely have blond hair and blue eyes, although that can’t be wholly established at this point. The boys would be about 16 years old. They may be living together with one family or living separately with two different families. These boys are the royal Princes, Prince Oliver Mason Wright and Prince John Jacob Wright, mine and Joanne Wright’s legal sons that were switched at birth by an unscrupulous person or persons unknown while at the hospital. We just discovered we have been raising someone else’s twin boys as our own. I plan to get to the bottom of this. I am offering a reward of USD 50,000 for the return of my two boys. Please, people, search your souls and do the right thing. If your twins went missing at that time, I also want information on that.

Signed Prince Jack Mason Wright, acting Prince of Bhatangary’

Once the proclamation was sent out, Jack sent everyone out of the office and began his search for all papers during the timeframe and then began the tedious task of looking through them for any helpful information. He came across the name Prince Richard Joseph Wright. He wasn’t familiar with this name. Richard was married to Princess Jane Susanna Wright Nee Lewis. Now, where did they fall on the family tree? Jack kept searching. Hours went by, and then the checkbook showed up. Jack looked at his father’s script. He began noticing a monthly fee of USD 50,000 that went on for at least 16 years to Richard.

Could this be a clue? Jack still had no idea who he was. He went to his father’s box of old family pictures. He found his father as a child, but there was something a little different about some of the photos. Sometimes he was wearing glasses. Then he came across a picture of him with another boy who looked just like him. Twins? Identical twins except one of them wore glasses. His father didn’t, so maybe that was Richard, although the one with glasses could now be wearing contact lenses.

Jack headed down to the jail. He had to talk to his father, the King. At least he hoped he was the King. Things were so complicated right now. Anything was possible.

“Sire? It has come to my attention that you have an identical twin and that he wore glasses. As I watched you here for several minutes, I noticed you squinting at the newspaper. Just who are you?”

“Jack, I am sorry for all the subterfuge. I usually wear contact lenses but didn’t get the chance to put them in before they arrested me. Like you, John never wanted to be a King, but I did. We both married, and John initially accepted the seat on the throne as the older brother, but it just wasn’t to his taste. I was born to the throne. We talked to our wives, and they both agreed to go on with the charade if that would make us happy. The thing is you are not my son, and the boys are not my grandchildren, and they are safe with their grandfather at my estate and have been since your father first got the crazy idea to kidnap them and raise them to be the future King. Like us, one is strong, and one is not. The oldest should go to the throne, but like us, the oldest is not suitable for the job. Even though John didn’t want to be the King and run the country, he had been taught everything so he could raise the boys correctly. That ditzy Princess was a simple nuisance, and I don’t know why I kept her on with all the stuff she pulled and is still pulling. I ignored her antics. I guess I should have paid more attention, but really the boys are safe. I will have my brother John send the boys over, and you can run the DNA tests on them. They will pass, you will see.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this earlier before I went through all this? I have caused quite a stir on my own, which could have been avoided, and poor Joanne was heartbroken when those boys weren’t ours and thought they might have been lost forever.

Jack left the jail and headed back to the castle. In all his worry about his sons, he had forgotten that it was the Christmas season. He stopped at the local church and watched a live play. An angel was releasing a dove of peace. Around the angel are lighted candles, pine cones, and a small wooden donkey.

Jack relaxed and believed that all would be well. It seemed his son just might be able to take over the throne once he turned 18. Jack would see him prepared. Although what to do about Oliver not wanting to be a prince either was a problem. Jack didn’t go about it the right way either and part of this mess was his fault. He loved Joanne and his sons, all four of them. He would do his duty and then go on with his life as a regular man. He just didn’t feel like he was supposed to be the King.

Punishment Meted Out

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

As the plane was coming in for a landing, Jack snapped out of his reverie. He looked across at Joanne, who was obviously thinking as well. The boys were talking quietly, but not loud enough to hear what they were saying.

Their lives are about to change in a big way for all of them. It was most definitely going to be an unpleasant change. He had no desire to arrest his parents and Princess Isabella, but if they did what it appears they have done then they must be arrested and his father, the King, must abdicate his thrown and Jack must take over and rule the Kingdom until Oliver (his real son) is ready to do it himself.

Both boys threw themselves into Joanne’s arms. She held them, and the three of them cried. Jack wanted to join them, but he had something he had to do, no matter how unpleasant it was. He disembarked, and directions were given for the security team to keep an eye on Joanne and the boys.

Jack hired a car to take him, Joanne and the boys to the island kingdom. He was dropped off at the police station in the town outside the castle. Joanne and the boys were taken to the nearest hotel to wait for the next step in this terrible situation. There was a chill in the air and Jack pulled his coat closer. Bits of snow clung here and there and the water surrounding the island had some ice in it although it wasn’t frozen solid.

Jack headed inside the police station and talked to Marcus Green. They hadn’t seen each other since Jack left the Kingdom 16 years ago, but now was not the time to become reacquainted. Jack explained in detail what he had believed had happened to his and Joanne’s sons, and about the boys they raised, thinking they were the real princes all along, and the DNA testing proved that they were not. He told him what he remembered about the time of the birth and the grandfatherly man and the young girl with the double pram with twins in it and that coincidentally there was a bomb threat, and the hospital had to be evacuated, and when the twins were returned to the nursery, they were missing their bracelet alarms.

When they tried to get testing done on their boys, someone kept preventing them from getting a DNA test. After finally getting the police in Pennsylvania to escort the DNA checks to the lab and they came back that neither he nor Joanne were the parents of the boys they raised, he was horrified to realize that his parents must have kidnapped his children and kept them from removing them from the Kingdom to be raised.

Jack requested Marcus to come with him to the castle and ask to have the boys brought out and tested. He also wanted to talk to his parents and Princess Isabella if she was still there. Marcus assured him that she was and that she was raising a set of twins and that she claimed to have the legal rights to them. He never contested her claim, so nothing was done about it. No one knew that Jack had no idea that she was raising the boys. They just assumed that they turned the boys over to her to make up for the divorce.

Jack was shocked at what he heard. None of his friends thought that it would be unusual for him to give up his children along with his crown. No one asked him or wondered why?

Jack decided to go to the castle now and see his sons. Marcus and his patrol came along. It was apparent that they would be arresting the King, Queen, and Princess from what Jack has told him and the proof he has. Princess Isabella flaunted her custody of the boys, so he believes Jack, and he was also shocked that Jack’s parents would do such a thing. This was going to be a difficult task to do.

Approaching the castle gate, Marcus Green, the police chief, demands the gates to open. After stating his business, the gates opened, and Jack joined then by Joanne and the two boys they raised, entered, along with Marcus.

“What’s going on here,” the King demanded?

“Sorry, Sire, but it seems that Jack here has proof that you have kidnapped his two sons and had Princess Isabella raise them. We must run a DNA test on your two grandsons and see just who are their parents as it has been proven that the two boys they have raised are not their children biologically. The hospital records show the day they were discharged was the day of the bomb scare, and many people remember the story of the grandfatherly man who always came in and one day brought a young girl with a double pram with twins in it. Both disappeared right after the alarm was sounded, and the hospital evacuated. I have brought the town’s doctor to do the DNA test, so there is no chance of trickery. Bring the boys and the Princess down now, Sire!”

The Princess was screaming at the top of her lungs to leave her babies alone. She was totally delusional. “Nooooooooooo,” she continued screaming and holding onto the boys.

The boys were confused since they had not been privy to the story of their real lives. They had been told that their father left their mother and was killed in a plane accident. They thought the Princess was their mother, and no one told them otherwise.

Now they were escorted downstairs separate from the Princess. She was cuffed and taken off to the local jail in town.

The story was explained to them in full, and they met Jack and Joanne, and both boys who, of course, had the exact same names. The four 16-year-olds stared at each other, and none of them said a word. The actual royal children were blond-haired and blue-eyed, just like Jack and Joanne.

The doctor swabbed each boy and went to run the tests supervised by a patrolman.

In the meantime, Marcus now had to explain to the King and the Queen that they were both guilty of kidnapping as well or at the very least aiding and abetting in the abduction, and for that, they would also reside in the town jail while it was decided what would be done about them. They may have thought they were doing what was best for the kingdom, but it was still illegal, and they drew the Princess in and got her involved in their scheme, and she lost her sanity and really thought they were her children. They didn’t do her any favors. The town had already voted, and no matter what the King was finally sentenced to, he would most likely have to abdicate his throne. The townspeople were horrified that the man they looked up to had done such a thing. He couldn’t claim that for 16 years, he had no idea children were living in the castle and in the nursery.

Jack knew that meant he would have to step up for now, and considering that the Princess raised his royal sons, it could be for a long time until Oliver would be ready to take over for his father.

To spare the King and Queen, the full humiliation, the chief of police, didn’t handcuff them. He had them led to the town jail to join Princess Isabella, who was still wailing over her children. He put them in a quieter area by themselves and went back to see what was going on in the castle and if he was still needed. He and Jack sat down to talk.

“Jack, do you have any idea what to do at this point concerning the Kingdom. I know you haven’t really been in touch. Your few friends bragged about the money they were making to let you think that all was going well here. I am sorry I didn’t notice anything strange going on. I had no idea what the Princess was doing, but since she told everyone, except the boys, that their father had left them for her to raise, I didn’t think anything of it. I knew you didn’t want to be part of running the Kingdom.” Marcus sighed, disgusted with himself. He should have been a better friend to Jack.

“Someone shut the Princess up. Use a potion if necessary to calm her down. She is getting on my nerves,” Marcus yelled to the other side of the office near the holding cell where they had her.

Well, Marcus,” Jack said thoughtfully, “ I am going to have to go through all my dad’s records for the last 16 years to see what has been going on. I know he is young, but I wonder if he has some kind of mental health problem. That could account for his crazy behavior. I think he should have a full physical and mental workup by the doctor from the mainland. Specialists in mental health and I will get busy going through his books, plus I need to talk to those poor children. They are bewildered and upset right now, and that includes the two I raised as my own. To be honest, I am confused myself. How could this have happened?”

“I was looking at those two boys, and I am not sure they are mine either. They have blond hair, but there is no resemblance to Joanne or I. You don’t think that crazy Princess or my parents actually did another switch to throw everyone off?”

“Jack, that is quite a conspiracy you have going there,” Marcus mused. “Though after what I have seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

“I am going to head over to the castle and talk to the family first and then the servants to get their ideas on what might have been going on while I was gone,” Jack said.

Chapter Four

Another Baby, Girl or Boy

So far, it had been a monotonous summer. Every day the high temperatures were draining, and the sun was frying me to a bright red. I do not tan. I burn. During our honeymoon in Virginia Beach three summers ago, I had a sunburn that had turned into sun poisoning. From day one, I could not leave our hotel room as just the heat, even in the shade, hurt my sunburned skin.

So to a woman who was seven months pregnant and huge, and with a toddler under two years old, having to sit outside every day with the toddler was sheer torture. There was no air conditioning in our home on base. Neither of us wanted to have to be inside where it was hotter.

Every day I had to take my toddler outside so she could play in her wading pool. One day I had an entertaining idea. I went over to where she was splashing in her pool and climbed in and sat down. I used a bucket to pour water over my head and body, especially my huge belly. She laughed and started pouring water over me as well.

The neighbors were starting to stop and gawk at us. We were in the front yard, so it was open to everyone. It felt so good that every day we sat in the pool. I was able to cool us both off and entertain the neighborhood at the same time. They got used to seeing us sitting in the pool.

I didn’t buy a maternity bathing suit. Maternity clothes were so expensive. I made most of my maternity clothing or bought it at the thrift shop on base. Or I borrowed my mom’s maternity clothes that I used to wear as an unpregnant teenager because I loved the styles. I had some material that had been laying around from the outfit I had worn to go and see Andy when he graduated from boot camp. It was a small black and white checked pattern. I had sewn a top that was made with lots of elastic and was like a tube top with a skirt sewn on to the bottom. It worked great as a summer top or to use when we were sitting in the wading pool.

The problem arose when we went to the beach with our best friends, Charlie and Kim. I usually didn’t go in the water as I hate being pulled under or thrown around by the waves. So, I wore the top with a pair of shorts as my bathing suit.

I decided to go in since everyone else was. I got pulled under and choking, surfaced, and stood up. The water had stretched the elastic and made the skirt heavy. The next thing I knew, it was down around my hips under the baby bump, and our friend, Charlie, happened to be staring right at me. I was so embarrassed and dropped back into the water, trying to pull the top back up and over the baby and my breasts. I may be an exhibitionist, but not to the point of nakedness, especially in front of people I knew. The other people there I would never see again, but we were close friends with Charlie and Kim. I struggled with the waves and the top and managed to get it up to the point that I was mostly covered. I got out of the water fast and wrapped my towel around me.

I went back to the wading pool until summer ended and it cooled down some. That may have been the last time I ever set foot in the ocean. I hated the sticky feeling and the sand that managed to get where it didn’t belong.

Since I was working, my fellow friends at work had set up a shower for me at the officer’s club. They thought they were secretive, but I knew what was going on. Every time I walked up and they were talking, they all shut up and looked away. I would have had to have been dumb and blind not to figure that one out. I could have used that shower for my first baby, but hey, at that point, I would take it. We never did have much with the first child, and most of the clothes were from yard sales, so I got some new baby stuff with this one. We still had all the baby stuff from the first child, and this made for some new things to add to it. As she outgrew clothes, I packed them away. We were still planning on having a third child, and so nothing was given away.

This brings me to her due date. The doctors had decided she was due on a particular day in October. I went into labor with her quickly as she was the second child.

I went to work that night, the day before she was due. I worked at the Officer’s Club. I could keep working as the hostess; I just had to stop waitressing.

I came home that night, and our friends, who would be watching our older child, had just left, when the labor pains started. We had to wait till they got home and call them to come back and get our oldest daughter as I was in labor, and I had to get to the hospital.

We arrived there after midnight, making it my official due date. When asked my due date and I told them it was today, those nurses had the nerve to say to me that I couldn’t possibly be due that day because babies do not come on their due dates. What kind of stupid reply was that? Babies do come on their due dates all the time. I was in terrible pain and tired of arguing with the nurses.

Finally, the records were brought upstairs from the ob/gyn section of the hospital for the night deliveries. The nurses pulled my file, and finally, they had to agree that it was indeed my due date. I wasn’t dilated yet, but she was the second baby, so they didn’t send me home. They made me walk the hospital floors until finally, my water broke. Then I could be set and start the proceedings for a delivery.

I didn’t have anesthesia. As I said, I had all my children by natural childbirth. It hurt a lot, but I was more afraid of the needle for the anesthesia than I was of the pain from the birth itself. My first child took 36 hours of labor and was 6 pounds 9 ½ ounces and, this one took 4 and a half hours from start to finish and weighed 7 pounds 15 ½ ounces. She was a lot larger than her sister had been.  A pound and a half is a big difference when it comes to babies.

The second child was born in October of 1979, five days before my birthday. Our two kids were both born around one of our birthdays.

My Grandson – Brayden John Hanratty

My Grandson – Brayden John Hanratty was born at 1:18 AM on December 6, 2019. He is doing well despite his rocky development. He was small compared to her almost 9 lb other two boys. He was 7 lbs 2 oz and was 20 inches long.

My daughter is 40 and this is her 3rd child. The other two are 22 (almost) and 13.
