For visually challenged writers, the image shows an empty landscape beneath a blue sky. Darkness gathers above the horizon and between land and cloud, the sky is aflame…
John and Susan (Rough Housing Part 2)
By Teresa Smeigh 2019
The sky was aflame as the sun was descending. Susan and John, walking hand in hand, were whispering to each other as another couple was not far ahead of them.
Susan dropped her bag, and the contents spilled everywhere. She fell to the ground and began picking things up and putting them slowly back in her tote bag while keeping her eye on the other couple. The other two kept walking and got further and further away.
Susan put the last item back into her tote and then stood up to face John. The other couple was far ahead of them now. He just stood there and looked at her. He seemed confused. He hadn’t helped her pick things up, so she assumed he knew what she wanted, but now he just stood there.
“John, I simply don’t understand you. Do you like me or not? If not, let me know, and I will leave you alone. I am tired of doing all the work here in this relationship if that is what you call it, of course.”
This time John took her in his arms and gave her a long kiss.
“Does that answer your question?”
“Actually you are just confusing me more. I was the one who kissed you first, and now at first, it seemed as if you weren’t interested. Then I have to goad you to kiss me. I just don’t think you are that interested in me.”
He didn’t say another word and just kissed her hard and long, his hands in her hair, and she began sighing.
“Now that was a kiss,” she said and she looked as if she was going to swoon. He took her into his arms and just held her close.
They didn’t say another word, just continued walking arm in arm.
